A letter from the heart

Every day, our care workers support people in all kinds of ways. Sometimes it’s directly, and other times it’s through our community programs, which offer connection and companionship in a safe, welcoming space.

Recently we received a letter from Kylie* who had been volunteering for the Green Care program in Toowoomba. Green Care provides a calm environment for people from migrant and refugee backgrounds who feel disconnected, stressed or anxious. It gives them the chance to learn new skills, make new friends, and enjoy being outdoors.

Although not a Green Care participant herself, Kylie’s involvement has changed her life—and the lives of her children, too. We’d like to acknowledge the dedication and sensitivity of Carly, one of our Mental Health Project Officers, who supports people with care and kindness every single day. Well done Carly, you—and our incredible care workers everywhere—do an amazing job.

Dear Carly and Mercy Community,

I just wanted to express my gratitude for the wonderful experience we (myself and my children) have had since connecting with the Green Care Program at the start of the year.

When we arrived in Toowoomba we had escaped a domestic violence situation and had experienced a period of homelessness. We had never been to Toowoomba and felt very isolated on arrival. I contacted your service to undertake volunteer work in the hope of meeting new people and keeping myself busy.

I was absolutely delighted to meet Carly. She was so warm, welcoming and friendly. She invited us into the garden community and engaged us in the activities and goings-on. This has been core to our recovery.

There have been times I know I would have been hospitalised due to my mental health, as I struggled with depression and anxiety, but having the daily contact with the garden pulled me out of those dark places and helped me to heal and be stronger for my family. Being outdoors with nature and having a purpose has been integral to me getting back on my feet. I am so grateful for this.

Thank you, Carly, for your consistent care and support. My whole family adore you. We have seen the way you engage your other garden participants with such enthusiasm and great care. You run a wonderful and effective program. Not only have I healed emotionally but my volunteer hours now fill the gap on my resume and in turn enhance my employability as I now seek employment to move forward.

Kind regards,

Kylie & family
