Tee Tee’s journey: A refugee’s road to empowerment with support from Mercy Community

He defied the odds to carve out a new life.

It’s been a long road for Tee Tee, but today he stands resilient, his determination an inspiration for all who have had the privilege of working with him.

Battling both intellectual disability and the challenges of adjusting to life in a new country, Tee Tee arrived in Queensland after spending more than two decades in a Thailand refugee camp.

Everyday tasks were a significant challenge, and with English his second language communication provided additional barriers.

That’s where Mercy Community stepped in.

Recognising Tee Tee’s need for extensive support, our Disability Support team set out to connect him with the services and resources he desperately needed.

Small steps

Tee Tee’s journey began with small steps, as he cautiously ventured into the community with a support worker by his side.

Initially withdrawn and isolated, Tee Tee was hesitant to participate in crowded activities.

Our team gently encouraged him to explore new experiences, including a community barbecue.

It was here that a huge milestone was met when Tee Tee took a leap of faith and joined in the fun – a monumental achievement and a key turning point.

As Tee Tee continued to engage with the community, his confidence grew, and he began to embrace new opportunities for growth.

With guidance from his support worker, he learned essential life skills, such as cooking and cleaning up after himself, fostering greater independence and self-reliance along the way.
