Celebrating Doris’ 107th birthday

Doris Twomey, aged care resident at Mercy Community’s Loreto Nursing Home in Townsville, is proof that age is just a number.

Our story about Doris’ recent celebration for her 107th birthday appeared in newspapers all around the country this week including The Courier-Mail, Townsville Bulletin and Cairns Post.

Doris celebrated her birthday at Loreto surrounded by her ever-growing family, including her beautiful great-grandchildren.

Her daughter, Helen, said Doris’ inspirational stories all feature a common thread—determination—a key character trait helping her to reach this grand age.

“Still to this day she can comment on so many topics and has such strong views. Never late for anything, always well-prepared. Think the staff are well aware of this,” she said.

“Growing up mum always dressed well, had her hair done—such a proud lady. I know how important it is for her to still enjoy taking pride in herself. Mum loves having her hair done, she tells me: ‘If your hair looks good, you feel good’.

“I know she is lost without her books and reading, I often play music on my mobile when visiting her … it takes her into a world she loved. Her passion is classical music.

“Doris Twomey would no doubt be one of the oldest residents at Loreto Nursing home, such a grand age. Her motto has always been hard work, a love of music and daily exercise. Sadly, this is no longer possible, but she still enjoys outings with family—not bad for a lady of her age. (She) loves family around her and keeping us on our toes.”

Born in 1916, the former music teacher and nurse is inspirational not only to her family but also to our dedicated staff who care for her daily needs.

Loreto Nursing Home Diversional Therapist Mary Simet has worked closely with Mrs Twomey for the past nine years.

“What a truly amazing woman she is, and a great inspiration she has been to me personally, and I think I could honestly say to many of the staff,” Ms Simet said.

“In my opinion Doris was an independent woman before her time. Her capacity for absorbing and discussing large political autobiographies, enjoying her beloved classical music, (she taught music) and in previous years enjoying a very active social life is inspiring.

“I think I could say she has lived her life to the fullest despite many setbacks. Can I also add she is a ‘Fashionista’ in the full sense of the word.

“She is supported by a wonderful loving family and remembers all their birthdays and special days, recently the arrival of two beautiful great-grandchildren has enlivened her life immensely.

“I know the staff at Loreto value greatly the time spent with Doris, and admire her resilience, determination, and acceptance of many health issues.”

Congratulations and Happy Birthday Doris! What an inspiration you are to us all.

Doris Twomey: 1916-2023

Our lovely Doris passed away peacefully on February 2, surrounded by her loving family.

Doris lived at Loreto for 10 years. She always took a great interest in the lives of Loreto staff and would ask after our children, remembering their names and even jobs or courses they were doing. She was just incredible. On behalf of the Loreto staff, it was a great privilege to care for Doris, and she will be missed so very much.

Our hearts and prayers are with Doris and her family, and we hope they find peace and comfort in the many beautiful stories they all share.

Rest peacefully Doris.
