Have you ever said goodbye to someone, thinking it would be the last time you’d ever see them – but the universe had other plans? This is one of those stories.
As a young boy, Dinesh grew up in Nepal, only a stone’s throw away from the picturesque Himalayan mountains. During High School Dinesh and his friend Saroj often talked about travelling the world, visiting new places and exploring new cultures. After graduating they went their separate ways, looking for adventures in new countries. It was a sad farewell, as both boys knew it would most likely be the last time they would see each other.
When Dinesh arrived in Australia, he spent some time traveling, until he joined the Individualised Support Team at Mercy Community. What he hadn’t expected, living 9,000km from home, was that one of the team members would be his old friend Saroj. The coincidences don’t stop there though, they soon realised that they were supporting the same person. Although they are currently on alternative shifts, they still find time on their breaks and after hours, to rekindle an old friendship and reminisce about their time together in Nepal. But wait, there’s more…
The person they both support moved to Australia from Greece when she was a little girl and prefers to speak in her native language, reminding her of days spent growing up in the Mediterranean. Speaking Greek could prove challenging for some disability supports professionals, not for Dinesh. It just so happens that Dinesh is fluent in Greek, as he spent some time working in Greece before he moved to Queensland.
Maybe it’s fate, a higher power, or a great recruitment team helping guide them on their journey, we like to think it’s all the above.
