Culture, footy and community building were winners from last Saturday’s inaugural Cultural Cup competition held in Oakey.
Sponsored by Mercy Community, the Southwest Queensland Emus team won the men’s division against Pacific Nations Toowoomba.
The two representative sides went head-to-head, across four different age groups with war cries and ‘welcome to country’ all part of the action.
Mercy Community’s Laurie Stewart (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Regional Cultural Lead in Toowoomba) was the Emu’s assistant coach and understandably proud of his team’s achievement.
Barry Lenihan, General Manager First Nations, said: “From the spine-tingling song in Jagera language, backed by the didgeridoo and clap sticks, to the beautiful songs of Polynesian and Māori culture backed by the Lali drums, to the jerseys and ultimately the war cries, the day was an amazing mixing of cultures.”
