Inside Cookery Nook… with Daniel Veen

How much do you know about Cookery Nook?

Mercy Community’s supported employment program has been providing opportunities for people with disabilities since the 1970s – and it’s also one of Brisbane’s most successful catering services and cafes.

At Cookery Nook, we offer more than just employment; we provide comprehensive training to develop kitchen skills and foster personal growth within a commercial setting.

Our goal is to support our team in achieving their aspirations, whether in hospitality or beyond – and now we’re on the lookout for more staff!

Daniel Veen, 36, has been with Cookery Nook since 2020 and recently moved from the commercial kitchen at Nudgee to our café, at Lutheran Services’ Alondra Residences, in Nundah.

We sat down with him to find out more about a career with Cookery Nook…

What’s life like at Cookery Nook?

Really good! Before the Nudgee café opened, I was mostly doing catering deliveries, but now I’m a barista – I take it very seriously.

What do you love about it?

Making coffee, conversing with customers. I enjoy the company of the people who come in and so forth.

“You don’t need any experience to apply for a job at Cookery Nook, but it’s good to be interested in it.”

What’s your favourite coffee order?

Personally, I enjoy the taste of drinking all coffee but most of all I like cappuccino. The most popular order with Cookery Nook café customers is the flat white with full cream milk.

What motivated you to apply for a job at Cookery Nook?

I was between jobs and my sister heard about it and got me onto them.

What’s next for you?

I’m really happy where I am at Cookery Nook so I’ll be staying here. The café at Nundah is close to home for me – I can pretty much walk two blocks to work.

What would you say to someone considering a career with Cookery Nook?

I would recommend that they apply. It is a supportive team and there is great on the job training.
