Disability Supports work is a deeply rewarding career

Since leaving the world of Information Technology behind, Mercy Community’s new General Manager of Disability Supports, David Jukes, has shaped a highly successful career in community services.

David was promoted to the GM position in July 2023, after initially being employed as Mercy Community’s Director of Individualised Supports.

He is passionate about how he can make a difference to the lives of the people Mercy Community supports in the new leadership role.

“It’s the type of work that rewards you deeply because of the tangible benefits and incremental improvements you see in the lives of the people we support,” he said.

Since 2020, David has worked exclusively in the disability supports sector; however, since 2014 he has worked in community services and in aged care.

While busy settling into Mercy Community, David took the time to provide an insight into why he made the move from IT to the community services sector.

So, what attracted him to the community service and disability sector?

“The disability community is full of remarkable, resilient individuals who have faced great adversity and triumphed with humility and perseverance,” he explained.

“Working in this field is deeply satisfying, offering personal and professional fulfilment through the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

“Working with and beside these incredible people in an organisation guided by strong values is a truly rewarding experience.

“I’ve worked in community services since around 2014, recently, I have worked as General Manager of Service Delivery with Open Minds and prior to that I was a regional director with Life Without Barriers.

“Many, many, years before all that I worked in health informatics and IT roles – technology in care and social impact is close to my heart.”

What are your goals for the future of Disability Supports here at Mercy Community?

“Mercy Community already offers unique and empowering services to the people we support, and our mission and values are at the heart of everything we do.

“In the future, I want to better understand how we contribute to the goals of the people we support at an individual level, collecting evidence of the value of Mercy Community contribution and increasing the evidence base available to us when improving our services.”

Mercy Community wishes David all the very best in his new role and welcomes the knowledge and passion he will bring to the people that we support.
