How to choose NDIS goals: your guide

A young woman sits in the drivers seat smiling and waving to some one off camera. A young man who is her support worker leans on the open car window behind her, smiling at her.

Goal setting is an important part of any NDIS plan. Here we provide tips for choosing your NDIS goals, suggestions on what to do if your goals change, and some practical examples of NDIS goals.

Knowing what you want to achieve helps our Disability Supports team ensure that you receive the support and services that meet your needs.

How do I choose NDIS goals?

The best part of setting goals is that they’re for YOU. You get to decide what you would like to achieve, and we’ll work together to pursue your goals.

Usually your goals will be categorised as a short-term goal (can be achieved within a year) or as a long-term goals (take a bit longer to reach). Having a mix of both is ideal.

  • What do you like to do? Is there a hobby or skill you already do but would like to improve?
  • What would you like to try?
  • Do you want to make more friends or meet new people?
  • Is there something about your life or routine that you would like to change?
  • This time next year what would you like to have achieved?
  • Are you working? Would you like to start working or do you want to start a new job?
  • What excites you?

Can my NDIS goals change?

We are here to help you achieve your dreams and aspirations.  Our Support Coordinators will help you identify and communicate your wishes to the NDIA.  You can change or add to your goals at any time, or as often as you would like, to create the future you want.

What are some examples of NDIS goals?

  • Moving out of home by yourself or with a friend
  • Catching the bus or train by yourself
  • Finding employment
  • Starting a sport or joining a team
  • Studying at TAFE or university
  • Building your existing friendships or starting new ones

Whether these are short-term or long-term goals will depend your own skills and experiences.

You can download and print the NDIS’ Creating your NDIS plan booklet for free which includes a space to record your goals.
